BLACKHYVE case study

The purpose of this case study was to redesign the Optimal Resource Calculator pages to best communicate results and entice users to purchase the proprietary software.

Existing page design

Planning and keeping on track large-scale construction can be a large-scale headache.

Anticipating manpower, orchestrating complementary resources, and estimating a reasonable timeline are prerequisites that require accuracy in order to design a construction plan.

BLACKHYVE is a brand new project management software aimed at increasing efficiency through up-leveled communication, calibration, and synchronicity of the construction process.

The first step in creating the project plan is estimating mandatory resources and when they’re needed. BLACKHYVE’s proprietary algorithm calculates these requirements and illustrates these metrics in a graph.

These recommendations were rooted in the goal of making the input page easier to use by incorporating:

  • placeholder text

  • emphasis on required information

  • graphics to better illustrate required inputs

While accurate, the exciting calculator:

  • left many user questions

  • bred uncertainty of what the graph demonstrated

  • and had nowhere to go from there

Expanding upon Calculator results and organizing the information cohesively and consistently

In order to:

  • provide users a CTA

  • give information with which to properly interpret the results

  • and motivate users to purchase the product

it was essential to add more information following the graph results.

 and in the future:

  • Pop-ups, appearing upon hovering, that give definitions and other info pertinent to the user successfully creating the Manpower Trapezoid.

  • Similar pop-up animation used in the grey space of the graph to detail exactly which Resource is required.

  • Calendars that appear when selecting the Start or End Date input fields so that users can choose to highlight a date on the grid or type in a date.

  • Conduct user interviews (with potential customers, namely contractors involved in large-scale projects) because I think the target audience for BLACKHYVE is very specific and especially nuanced in the way that they engage with technology.

  • Potentially add product keywords and definitions to the information blocks below Calculator results as a way to introduce BLACKHYVE standards and help potential users better grasp product capabilities.
